Euharlee, Georgia, is a cute, 19th century town best known for being the home of the oldest covered bridge in Georgia–the Euharlee Covered Bridge–but there is much more to see and do in this charming little creekside village. Derived from a Native American word meaning, “She laughs as she runs,” even Euharlee’s name itself is a depiction of the sound that the creek makes as it moves towards its juncture with the Etowah River. Easily walkable by foot in just ten to fifteen minutes, this is special place, still frozen in time. It’s definitely worth a quick visit if you’re ever passing through Northwest Georgia!
These are the Best Things to Do in Euharlee GA
1. Visit the Historic Euharlee Covered Bridge
The Euharlee Covered Bridge was built in 1886, but even to this day, it’s still the most recognizable landmark in the entire town. The oldest remaining covered bridge in Georgia, it spans 138 feet over the Euharlee Creek and cost $1300 to construct at the time of its assembly. Today it’s a popular tourist attraction and photography spot. Couples looking for the most romantic places to visit in Georgia love to visit this small town to pose for old-fashioned style wedding and engagement photos. My own family even choose to travel here to have professional portraits done. It’s a cute little bridge, so if you love that kind of historic charm, you really should visit at least once!
2. Stop by the Traveler’s Well
I love the Traveler’s Well because it makes me feel a little bit like I’ve been transported to a fantasy novel and am going on an adventure. Hand-dug by the first settlers to the area, this public well was used by generations of weary travelers crossing Euharlee Creek.
3. Have Ice Cream at Bradley Farms Baked Goods and Creamery
Update: Sorry guys–It looks like Bradley Farms is now permanently closed. Perhaps another ice cream store or dessert shop will pop up in the same location by the time summer comes around again. We’ll keep our eyes open and update you as soon as we can! In the meantime, you can check out our guide to the best restaurants in Euharlee to find other yummy places to eat!
Bradley Farms has over 30 different ice cream flavors, including unique selections such as key lime pie, caramel pie, espresso, birthday cake, Superman, cotton candy, turtle tracks, moose tracks, blueberry cream pie, strawberry cheesecake, roadrunner, black walnut, butter pecan, rocky road, and peanut butter fudge. They also have milkshakes, sundaes, and banana splits. During my own visit, I tried the key lime pie ice cream, and it was soooo good. (I expected it to taste lime flavored but doubted that it would actually be capable of tasting like pie, but ohhh was I so wrong…in a good way! I don’t know how they made this ice cream taste JUST like key lime pie, but it truly did taste JUST like pie, and I was in heaven!!)
Fun History Fact: the building the creamery is housed in was once known as the “Miller’s House” because it originally was built back in the 1800s to house the operator of the town’s grist mill.
4. Frankie Harris Park (and Food Truck Friday)
Frankie Harris Park features a grassy field, pavilion, and picnic tables. On the second Friday of every month, the site hosts Food Truck Friday, or as the town itself likes to call it: “an old-fashioned picnic with a modern twist.” Local musicians play a free concert in the park while you pull up a lawn chair or lay out a blanket and eat something yummy from one of the food trucks parked out front. In addition to this reoccurring event, Frankie Harris Park also hosts the Euharlee Covered Bridge Fall Festival every year sometime around October. You can visit the town of Euharlee’s official Events Page here for more information.
5. Euharlee Farmer’s Market
The 2023 Euharlee Farmers Market will be running every Tuesday from 2pm to 6pm throughout June, July, and August, rain or shine. Come shop for fresh fruits, veggies, jams, and locally handmade products just outside the Euharlee Welcome Center and History Museum.
6. Kayak Euharlee Creek with Euharlee Creek Outfitters
Euharlee Creek Outfitters is housed in a historical building that was once the Euharlee Blacksmith Shop. Today it is an adventure outfitter, operating seasonally from May throughout the end of September. They provide kayak, canoe, and tube rentals, as well as free shuttle service to and from Euharlee Creek and the Etowah River. Trips range in duration from 45 minutes to 6 hours and are perfect for beginners. Find more info on their website here.
7. Have Dinner in Euharlee at Hometown Steak and Que
Hometown Steak and Que has the best barbecue in town, serving burgers, steaks, chicken, pulled pork, ribs, brisket, wings, and even nachos. I especially love the fried pickles, cheese curds, and fried okra. For dessert, they’ve also got homemade banana pudding, cobbler, peanut butter pie, cheesecake, red velvet cake, pineapple upside down cake, and ice cream. You can see their full menu on their website here.
8. Euharlee Covered Bridge Store and Mercantile
This is one of the oldest general stores in Georgia, dating back to the 1800s. Since that time, the Euharlee Mercantile has served as a dry goods store, a post office, a saloon, and even a gathering place to discuss politics and news of the day. Out of three general stores that existed in Euharlee during the 19th century, it’s the only one still in operation today. Now known as the Covered Bride Store and Mercantile, it also hosts a bakery inside in 2023: the Euharlee Covered Bridge Bakery. Stop by for snacks, souvenirs, baked goods, necessities, or even lottery tickets.
9. Cupcakes at Nanny G’s
If you’re still not full after dinner or skipped dessert earlier, you might want to stop by Nanny G’s at the Covered Bridge Bakery to stock up on some cupcakes, cookies, or pies. (They’re actually located inside the same building that houses the Covered Bridge Store & Mercantile / Covered Bridge Bakery.) Nanny G’s has been baking for over five decades. Currently they’re only open weekends, but you can check their website for the most up to date store information.
10. Tour the Other Historic Buildings of Downtown Euharlee Georgia
Euharlee, GA, contains numerous well-preserved buildings from an era long-forgotten. These buildings are all located within walking distance of each other on a single road, spanning just a couple blocks, so it’s easy to take yourself on a self-guided walking tour through history. Be on the lookout for markers located in front of the buildings which detail the historical significance of each location.
Lowry Grist Mill
The Lowry Grist Mill dates back to 1834, when Euharlee, GA, was first known as Burge’s Mill. The mill sits on the bank of Euharlee Creek and was used throughout history for grinding wheat, corn, and other grains. It was also used to produce electricity before power became more readily available. Seven different counties used the mill, and at one point, it had become the center of community life and recreation. The dam created a calm pool in the creek where people liked to gather to swim or socialize.
Euharlee Granary
Built in the 1860s, this building originally served as a commissary before later becoming the town Granary and being used exclusively for grain storage.
Euharlee Commissary
Also built in the 1860s, the Euharlee Commissary gave farming tenants a place to purchase financed goods. This enabled them to buy the necessary equipment and items they needed while delaying payment for such goods until after the sale of their crops, generally once a year.
Euharlee Blacksmith Shop
The Old Euharlee Lowry Blacksmith Shop was built in the late 1800s by Joe Lowry and stayed in operation until the 1950s. It provided families and farmers with iron shoes for mules and horses, plows for fields, wagon wheels, and even buggies–all forged by the blacksmith’s hands. Today it has another name and purpose–Euharlee Creek Outfitters–which provides tube, kayak, and canoe rentals for the nearby creek and river. (see photo up above under #6) You can find this location just to the right of the Euharlee Mercantile.
Old Euharlee General Store
This is one of the smallest and cutest buildings in Euharlee, Georgia. It was one of three general stores in Euharlee, and this one is believed to have been used as a smokehouse and storage house. You can find it right behind the Bradley Farms Ice Cream place.
Old Euharlee GA Lowry Homestead
You can find this cute little building directly behind (or to the side) of the Bradley Farms Creamery (also known as the Miller House). The original Lowry homestead was located in this area prior to its destruction by fire in the 1980s, but it would have been much larger than this little building. I’m not certain if this building was used as an additional residence, a storage house, or another general store (since there is no further information provided about it on all the little history markers and signs found throughout town), but it’s an adorable building, so it’s worth stopping to take a quick peek while you’re having some ice cream next door.
Old Euharlee Courthouse
This is the historic, former courthouse of Euharlee. Directly next door to it is an even smaller (actually, tiny–like the size of a closet) building called a calaboose, which basically just means jail or prison. I completely missed it on my visit to Euharlee, so sadly I do not have a photo of it (and only learned about it after my visit.) So don’t be like me if you visit this cute little town! Make sure you stop by to see the calaboose. It’s just to the right of this building pictured here.
